Kevin Hollinrake MP, representing Thirsk and Malton, has today expressed frustration over the apparent lack of full support from the York & North Yorkshire Mayor, David Skaith, for the campaign to dual the A64 between Hopgrove Junction and Barton-le-Willows. Despite several attempts to engage with the Mayor to avoid public disagreement, Mr. Hollinrake feels compelled to speak out on the matter due to the critical importance of the project for the region.
The A64 dualling project is vital to unlocking economic growth in North Yorkshire, supporting key manufacturing and tourism industries, and improving safety and connectivity for local communities. With the project previously scheduled for delivery under RIS3 (Road Investment Strategy), recent uncertainties surrounding funding have raised concerns about delays that could inflate costs unnecessarily.
In a letter dated October 23, 2024, Mr. Hollinrake called on Mayor Skaith to use his influence with the government to lobby for the project’s approval and secure a firm commitment on its delivery. However, the Mayor’s response, received on November 18, highlighted ongoing studies into broader corridor connectivity improvements, including rail and bus options, without committing explicitly to prioritising the dualling scheme.
Commenting on the matter, Kevin Hollinrake MP said:
“The dualling of the A64 is a shovel-ready project that our communities have been waiting on for far too long. It is disappointing that Mayor Skaith has not thrown his full weight behind this vital initiative. While I welcome efforts to improve regional connectivity, the focus must remain on delivering the A64 upgrade as a matter of urgency. The economic and safety benefits are too important to ignore.”
The MPs for Wetherby and Easingwold and Harrogate have also supported calls for the Mayor to take decisive action. Mr. Hollinrake urged Mayor Skaith to redouble his efforts and prioritise securing government backing for the project.
This development marks a critical juncture for North Yorkshire’s infrastructure future. Mr. Hollinrake remains committed to fighting for the A64 dualling project to ensure the region’s growth and prosperity.
