Last week I visited a display of zero emissions buses organised by the APPG for Buses and Coaches. The buses included one built by local manufacturer Alexander Dennis, which directly supports jobs in Thirsk and Malton with it's Scarborough-based factory. I have previously lobbied hard on behalf of the people behind hydrogen buses and for a bigger share of contract work to go to regional bidders SMEs in the supply chain.
I was very pleased to meet with the bus manufacturers in attendance to discuss the Government’s commitment to fund 4000 new zero emission buses which has the potential to bring well paid, high skilled jobs to every corner of the UK including in Thirsk and Malton. At such an important time for our environment and after years of lobbying ministers about the importance of hydrogen and hydrogen buses it was great to finally get to see the future of public transport.
The visit follows the Government’s publication of the National Bus Strategy which sets out a vision and opportunity to deliver better bus services for passengers across England, through ambitious and far-reaching reform of how services are planned and delivered.
