I want to thank everyone involved in the tremendous effort to prevent serious flooding in Malton, Norton and Old Malton at the weekend. Teams from the Environment Agency, Ryedale District Council and Yorkshire Water worked 24 hours a day to ensure residents and properties were safe after Storm Christoph hit North Yorkshire over the weekend. I met Malton Mayor Cllr Paul Emberley and Ryedale Council Leader Keane Duncan at County Bridge to see at first hand what damage had been done and was hugely impressed by the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.
The River Derwent has now peaked and is now starting to recede although river levels are still high.
According to the Environment Agency three Flood Warnings still in force for the Mill Beck at Welham Road, Norton, the River Derwent at Norton, and the River Derwent at Old Malton and will remain in place until levels subside. Pump operations are still operating in Malton, Norton and Old Malton to reduce the risk of flooding and will remain in pace for as long as required and residents are warned to avoid using low lying footpaths, to leave space between and pumps and the staff operating them and not to walk through flood water.
