I am delighted that Thirsk station is to get some much needed extra car parking spaces. I have been working with TransPennine Express and Grand Central to achieve this and it’s fantastic that they have cooperated together to make it happen. These extra spaces will make a huge difference. I have received many letters and representations from constituents concerned about the lack of parking at Thirsk and I am confident that it will make people feel more inclined to travel by train from Thirsk, rather than from York or to hop in their car.
Once completed, the car park will have 73 standard car park spaces, that’s a 50% increase, with five accessible spaces and two spaces for taxis. The project, which is costing £300k, will also enable four electric car charging points to be installed within the car park. The current carpark will be tarmacked and relined with improvements made to lighting and drainage. Any leftover Network rail land will be turned into a wild biodiversity area.
Graham Meiklejohn Regional Development Manager for TransPennine Express, said: “We are very pleased to work once again with Grand Central and Network Rail to improve the experience for customers at one of our stations. Thirsk car park is often at capacity throughout the week and these works once completed will provide additional spaces for those parking to travel to destinations across the North and to London.”
The work is expected to be finished during November.
