It's incredibly concerning to hear that Filey and Scarborough residents are being targeted by phone scams by criminals pretending to be the police. They are asking for personal information, such as banking details, or for a money transfer.
A number of phone companies offer services that can protect you from scammers and other nuisance callers. These include: caller display, incoming call blocking, anonymous call rejection. Many people may not be aware of these protections so I advise constituents to pass this information onto anyone they feel may be vulnerable to scams. If you would like this information sent via post to family members, friends or neighbours in Thirsk and Malton, please do contact my office who can send this on your behalf.
During my time in Parliament and as co-Chair of the APPG on Fair Business Banking, I have carried out a great deal of work on the wider issue of fraud. This includes pushing the Financial Conduct Authority make it easier for victims of bank transfer scams to claim compensation. Moreover, Ministers have been working with National Trading Standards to supply call blocking devices to some of the most vulnerable in society.
I will continue my work with the APPG on Fair Business Banking to ensure victims are compensated and have reasonable routes for redress.
