I am delighted that work to make the A64 safer around Crambeck is underway. I have been campaigning with Councillor Caroline Goodricke and local residents to make sure that it is safe to cross the A64 at Crambeck following the tragic deaths of four people in 2017. A new footpath has been built to link Crambeck and Castle Howard Station Road, and foundations laid for road widening to create new right turn lanes. The project will also see the introduction of five new traffic islands and footpaths, with better junction layouts. The final delivery of this scheme will be a huge relief to people living on that stretch of the A64.
Work on village gateways including through Rillington to slow traffic will continue until at least the end of 2020. The gateways are characterised by features like ‘welcome to’ entry signs asking people to drive carefully, and the circular sign showing a lowered speed limit through the villages. I have been working with Cllr Janet Sanderson and Rillington residents to make sure that Highways England addresses their concerns about the speed of traffic travelling through the village. There are concerns over the traffic lights by the Coach and Horses pub where heavy vehicles sometimes get stuck because of right turning vehicles and risk colliding with pedestrians when the lights change; concerns about the effectiveness of speed signs coming into the village and concerns over the safety of the pavements alongside the A64 particularly for those going to and from the playgroup in the village hall.
This work is part of Highways England’s £22m maintenance improvements on the A64.
Phase two of the drainage renewal between Sherburn and Ganton is being planned for the Autumn and Winter of this year. This will be followed by resurfacing of this stretch of the A64 and village gateway and speed reduction measures, through Ganton, Sherburn and Potter Bompton. Highways England is planning to renew the reflective road studs at various locations along the A64 to improve safety at night. Further work on three improvement schemes including widening the carriageway, constructions two bus laybys and improving crossing facilities close to the petrol station and café at Flaxton Moor.
